We have had a 'trial' going for nearly 3 months now. Any baby found to have
a tongue tie that is interfering with breastfeeding is referred to the
breastfeeding centre for evaluation first by the LC that is on that day (not
always the same LC) then the Consultant and Speech therapist reviews the
infant. If there is an agreement that the breastfeeding is being compromised
(that is correcting positioning and attachment does not improve the feeding)
the baby is sent off to one of the GP's that we usually refer to for
snipping. medical staff at our hospital do not do the snipping.
The outcome is then passed on to the consultant & speech therapist.
Why?
There was some concern expressed by the medical staff after they realised a
client was sent out to a GP to have a frenotomy whilst still an inpatient.
(the midwife who organized this had good intentions!)
What we were doing was referring them after*discharge to these GP's.
The positives:
It has been a good learning experience for all
It has highlighted the issues
The negatives (my personal opinion here):
There is now a delay in getting the frenotomy done, longer painful
breastfeeding for the mother and potentially a negative affect on her
lactation.
The 'trial' was to go for 3 months but we don't a good lot of numbers, but at
least it got the avenues of communication open. Not sure how many they have
had but I would guess under 10.

feed a baby with a tongue tie!)
