Hi Diane: Having been there several times, first know that it takes
time. Keep encouraging the younger nurses in the good job they are
doing. As far as the difficult technician, she needs a talk with you and
or your manager.
When I got someone difficult like that, I ask for a conference with her
and told her I would have to discuss with her manager if the problem
persists. Explain that when she had her kids, things were different. I
know it is more difficult when the nurses are younger but they must stay
with what they know is right. Explain that every mother deserves
correct, current information and that it confuses the patient when
information is inconsistent.
I explain that undermining current information is wrong and must stop.
Give her printed material to read.
But try to reassure her that she is a valuable employee and we just want
consistent current information.
If she pesists after this, write up a formal complaint and give to
manager. Hopefully you have a manager who will support you in this.
Written evaluations at our hospital do impact the persons evaluation and
pay raises.
Workers must be accountable for what they teach. One other LC I know
gave report cards to the staff as she saw them work. She gave A's down
to F's. This may seem harsh, but it works. At our hospital, we have very
good compliance with current information with the approach of talking,
writing up as needed. Then there is always one in most places that will
