Megan,
I think letter writing to express our disappointment in regard to a website
is a worthwhile endeavor--good for you. I think a letter writing campaign
can sometimes move industries and people to alter their stance. Dr. Greene
needs to know that what he is doing isn't acceptable to some people.
Sometimes people and industries can surprise us. I believe that there is
always hope that what we write or say might change someone (not necessarily
who we intend to change).
I don't see how your letter had any statements that would be considered
slander. You gave no information on DHA and the new formulas, you just
stated that you were a part of a media campaign that wants to closely examine
these new additives. I am quite sure that the infant formula companies
already know about the media campaign. I don't think Lactnet is a private
list and I believe it is well monitored by various industries who have an
interest in "human milk." So I don't think you are alerting anyone to
anything new or surprising.
People in business, if they are to succeed, listen to the consumer.
Sometimes they dismiss what it is said, but sometimes they
don't--particularly if they get more than one letter on the same issue. In a
weird way, the infant formula industry is dependent on the breastfeeding
community. After all human milk is the gold standard and thus the infant
formula industry is tied to the breastfeeding community. They need to have
research on human milk in order to make their product. They know more about
us, than we know about them. First law in any business is to know the
competition. They have done their homework.
We work with the infant formula customers, from mothers to governmental
programs and hospital institutions. Voicing our displeasure, might just move
some mountains. Letter writing campaigns are inexpensive and soul-satisfying
vehicles to bring about change. I applaud your efforts. Valerie W. McClain,
IBCLC
