There is great variation among WIC clinics within each state, and obviously
between states. I strongly encourage any person that refers to or works
lateraly with a WIC clinic to contact the supervisor or lead worker and
clarify your concerns and questions. Chose a time that is appropraite for
a lengthy conversation, or offer to be avaible at a later time to be
assured that the WIC person can answer in detail. As a WIC nutritionist, I
hear A LOT of anti-WIC sentiment. Personaly, I strive support breastmilk
for babies 100%, but I must work within the parameters of my job and
stipulations of the state and feds. I feel that my credibility is often
shot in the foot due to the negetivity clients hear out and about, both
from the medical community and the population at large. Please work with
us, we have a long, not so cheery history but are working hard to overcome
both our past reputation and current misrepresentations. We have a lot to
offer the community, and we desire to be partners in advocacy.
