I have a client who had a large loculated breast abscess incised and
drained about 2 weeks ago...grew Methicillin-resistant Staph aureus. At
the time the surgeon said he was suspicious about an area in the other
breast, and 3 days ago it became red and painful...and is another 4 cm
abscess.

The mom wants to know what the incidence of recurrent abscess is. She
is considering weaning, and wants to know the chances she'll wind up
with another abscess. I told her it is pretty clear that this abscess
was developing at the same time the 1st presented, and I would assume
the risk is very low, and I assume there is no research to give us an
answer, but I told her I'd ask you.

Any experience with this?

Thanks-

Kathy Leeper, MD,IBCLC
