Hello,
Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for stats on the # of pts
you see and in how many hours. I really appreciated the great ideas and
words of encouragement. I will be taking all the information to my manager
and will let you know of the outcome. I was so tired and discouraged when I
got home after seeing 26 mom/baby pairs and the following day seeing 24,
that everyone's responses really boosted my spirits. I know it is nearly
impossible to see that many and give them the care and time each new mom
deserves, and chart and take phone calls, but it is a reality here.
One day this week though, I did get a lovely reward for my work. I walked
onto the floor and the RN grabbed me and sent me into a room - hurry -mom
asked for a bottle. The young mom (19yr) had decided to bottle feed because
she had heard breastfeeding would hurt. I spent a long time talking to her,
gently getting the baby on and returning later in the day for another feed.
As I was leaving that night the grandfather saw me in the hall and came over
and said "that was a wonderful thing you did for my daughter and
granddaughter today, thank you!' I was so touched and thrilled.
I called mom the next day and my co-worker the next and the mother and
baby were both doing well.
Thank you for your warm support! It was much appreciated. Judith IBCLC
