It is too bad that someone who is highly respected in this field conveys the
attitude and opinion that she did/does about ILCA membership. There will
always be dissenters and those who feel they should be treated differently
due to "their" circumstances in any organization. I belong to ICEA but don't
teach childbirth classes at this time. I belong to AWHONN but am not employed
in a nursing role at this time. But I pay dues and get their journal. I enjoy
this and learn from them. Personally I'm offended by the attitude that if
you work in a hospital that 1) you make big bucks and 2) they pay all your
expenses for professional development. Most hopsitaIs DON'T pay these things
for staff, maybe for management level? such as professional association dues,
conferences, travel, books or other things we all buy to keep current. I,
along with others, pay from my families budget or my own resources. My
husband belongs to several organizations for his occupation and we also pay
those. And we think that it's important. Perhaps by lobbying to ILCA for
student rates or offering a payment plan for dues.
Many people DO get some benefits from JHL and by belonging to local
affiliates, attending conferences and being part of their professional
organization.
