sorry to reply to several posts at once, and a day late, at that.
re bilirubin/jaundice issues: I can't remember how old this baby was w/ a
bili of 20. first, please, if at all possible, do not interfere w/ continous
mother/ baby contact and bf. that said, if the primary physician is really
keen to treat the baby, then phototherapy could be used, especailly the bili
beds or bili blankets and this can be done at home. also supplementation if
it must be used, should be given w/ a lactation aid AT THE BREAST and if the
doc insists on formula and you can't dissuade this (or maybe bili is at a
critical level - there are cases) use elemental formula. One thing of course
is to know the reason for the higher bili (physiologic vs pathologic vs
exaggerated physiologic due to poor bf). If needed, FIX THE BF, OF COURSE,
LATCH ETC.
