This is my first post on LACTNET, yes I have been lurking!
I work at a hospital in CT, with another LC. Our hospital does approx.
1800 deliveries per yr. We have an extremely supportive manager, who has
approved staff breastfeeding inservice for all staff in L and D, Post
partum, Pediatrics and NICU. Anyway we crammed as much information into
our 2 hour allotment as we could. The first group of staff members
included several NICU nurses who have historically been very pro formula
and pro bottle---telling mothers, "your baby must learn to bottle feed
first" UGH.
So, in our inservice we talked about the mechanics of sucking, reviewed cup
and finger feeding and the rationale for each, and felt like they were
actually listening. In actuality they were waiting until we were
finished-- one of the NICU RN's stood up and said, "I have this study from
1997 done by Swiss researchers that says bottle-feeding doesn't affect
successful breastfeeding." She stood there proudly waving the article.
Being unaware of this study, we replied we would "take a look at it". (
This is after we had presented study after study and used the ILCA
Evidenced Based Guidelines Book.)
I did not see anything in the archives on this study.
Any words of wisdom? Anyone familiar with this study? Am I missing
something?
This multicenter prospective randomized study (done in 10 Swiss hospital)
says in conclusion :
"In our study population fluid supplements offered by bottle with or
without the use of pacifiers during the first 5 days of life were not
associated with a lower prevalence or shorter duration of breastfeeding
during the first 6 months of life."
Study: " UNICEF/WHO baby friendly hospital initiative: does the use of
bottles and pacifiers in the neonatal nursery prevent successful
breastfeeding?"
