Is this true with milking cows also? Before electricity, dairy milking
could only by
done by hand to my knowledge. Is there a difference in pressure
expressing in humans
vs the suction action of pumping insofar as emptying?

Magda,
That bit about the different composition of hand-expressed vs pumped
milk is very intriguing. Where can I learn more about the actual
differences? (Like which produces more sodium?) Please, everyone who
teaches hand expression, keep those comments coming. As I understand
it, maybe double-sided fully automatic electric pumps are often
considered the pinnacle of expression and milk maintenance because
they're the most reliably effective *pumps*, but I see here on Lactnet
that some LCs in other regions find hand expression with its skin to
skin contact is not only the economical choice but actually beats
pumping in their experience. I am very interested in this and want to
hear more about its efficacy for term newborns, preemies, long-term milk
supply protection if the baby isn't going to the breast, etc. Elise
