How often does it happen to you that something we are discussing on Lactnet
walks through your consulting room door the next day?  Saw a mum this
afternoon for an unrelated problem, but during history taking she told me
her first child (now 21 mths)  reacts quickly to exposure to dairy, egg,
peanuts and white fish.  This new baby is now 5 weeks old, and exclusively
breastfed.  Baby is not showing signs of allergies.

She told me she intends to exclusively breastfeed until 6 months, though a
friend has told her she could continue until 8 months.  She asked my
opinion.  I mentioned that many babies who do exclusively breastfeed for
longer than 6 months tend to be the ones who have multiple food
allergies.  I suggested that this was often the choice of the baby and not
necessarily of the mother.  Babies do choose when they want to start solids
- it's another form of learning to read feeding cues.  I did offer the
opinion that if her baby is showing distinct signs of wanting to start
solids around 6 months then I feel she should, choosing the ones that have
the lowest possibility of causing allergies.

What are others opinions and experience with baby's choice of when to start
solids and if the atopic babies are the ones who choose to prolong
exclusive breastfeeding?
