THis sounds like a silly question. Do some fat babies have wide, soft
stomachs?
I have a client whose baby (6 weeks) is gaining weight at the top range and
his stomach is very wide compared to his chest. His arms and legs are also
"chubby." She is concerned because her first two babies did not have this
look. They also did not gain as much. His abdomen is soft and not
uncomfortable when it is palpated.
She took him to the doctor because she was concerned. He thought that it
looked strange too and sent him to Children's hospital for ultra sounds of
his internal organs. Everything was fine--nothing enlarged. No one there
was concerned.
The doctor then said that he thought that his stomach was large because he
had feces in his intestines. He told the mother to use a suppository to
relieve the stool. Not much was expelled. His stools are yellow and seedy
and he has 2-3 a day.
He is a happy, alert boy and has plenty of wet diapers with clear urine.
Doesn't suffer from gas.
I did not have heavy babies--5th percentile-types--and I have never had a
client express such a concern. Is there something that could be wrong or
is he just a chubby one, who has a soft, squishy stomach?
