Our level III unit has gone to using Paula Meier's protocol with breastmilk. (I am at the level II unit) It is such a wonderful thing! Finally babies are going home sooner, healthier, less NEC, etc. BUT...recently we had two babies die of CMV. Preemies under 1500 grams. The protocol was stopped for these babies. BUT....THANKS TO OUR WONDERFUL Dr. Nancy Wight we are back to using breastmilk for these babies!! Our neos are so GRATEFUL that I had her as a resource! Yea! We can pasturize or freeze moms milk to reduce the risk of CMV to these babies, under 1500 grams.
If you ever have the opportunity to hear Nancy speak please don't pass it up!
