Dear Friends:
Sad posts where LCs are being asked to write garbage statements implying
equivalency between human milk and subsitutes.
We don't have to defend human milk. We have to continue to promote
health and well being in our clients. It is up to the institutions to defend
substitutes.
Getting sucked into keeping people from feeling guilty is useless and
distracts from the real issues of money and power and control.
As Molly Pessl says in the Evergreen video about the first hospital in
the US to become Baby-Friendly, "we have formula in our hospitalk, and we
will always have formula in our hospital." Being Baby-Friendly only means
that the formula must be supplied to the hospital the way that hospital beds
are and drugs and oxygen tubing: that means bought and paid for!
These arguments about guilt are old. What is wrong with us being
assertive and giving it back "We are not talking about guilt here, we are
talking about health."
     Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE, craniosacral therapy
