Dear Readers: I have been following the recent digest
articles related to "credentials;" I rather feel that
I may have created a "monster" regarding my original
posting. At our small rural hospital (400 deliveries
per year/level 1 nursery) a nurse aide (who is a
trained peer counsellor in breastfeeding through MSU
Extension) received an on-the-job permanent injury.
It is our hospital practice to "create positions" for
Workers' Compensation employees rather than having
them receive comp benefits. I am researching if
other hospitals utilize CLC (this will be the minimum
requirement for her to obtain in 6-12 months)
alongside IBCLC's in a hospital based setting. The
proposed job description will reflect the fact that
she is not licensed; a licensing is required for third
party reimbursement by most insurance companies. Her
position will be an ancillary/supportive role. With a
little more insight, please email me privately with
your thoughts, feelings, concerns; I am also
interested in what a proposed hourly pay scale should
reflect.

We are all in this field TOGETHER! Breastfeeding is
the norm and any other feeding type is the abnormal.
Unfortunately, when it comes to monetary
reimbursement, insurance companies become the manager
of money.

Happy holidays,
Debbie Colbert, RNC., IBCLC
Sault Ste. Marie, MI. 49783
