I hit the same problem daily as parents ask me about co-sleeping. I always
tell the parents I work with that as an IBCLC RN working in a medical
facility, I have to inform them that the AAP does not recommend co-sleeping
at this time. I then go on and say that it is not uncommon for
breastfeeding couplets to have a high rate of co-sleeping. The decision is
always up to the parents so I also review the safety guidelines for co-
sleeping and refer them to info like Dr. McKenna's. I feel in this manner I
stay supportive of one of the medical bodies that provide guidance for
patient care but also give families the information to make a educated
decision that works for them.
I do, when questioned, admit that all my babies slept with me and to
date, even my 16 year old daughter will still snuggle up if she's had a bad
dream....so its a bad thing my teen ager still seeks comfort from me? Don't
think so :)... it sure makes up for all the radical hormone days otherwise!
