I just received this update. I haven't had time to read the document, just
perused it, and it looks pretty interesting. It includes statistics that 40%
of babies spent their first hour in mother's arms, 67% hoped to breastfeed,
17% hoped to breastfeed and formula feed, 17% planned to use formula only.
65% reported that hospital staff encouraged breastfeeding. Of the mothers
who planned on exclusively breastfeeding, 80% were given free formula
samples or offers, and 47% were given formula or water to supplment their
breastmilk. One week after giving birth, 59% were feeding their babies
breastmilk only.

REPORT DOCUMENTS MOTHERS' PERSPECTIVES ON MATERNITY
Listening to Mothers: Report of the First National U.S. Survey of Women's
Childbearing Experiences presents information on women's attitudes,
feelings, and knowledge about aspects of their maternity experiences.
Between May 15 and June 16, 2002, Harris Interactive, in collaboration with
the Maternity Center Association (MCA), interviewed 136 mothers using a
telephone survey and an additional 1,447 mothers using an online version of
the survey. All the mothers had given birth to a single baby during the 24
months preceding the survey. The survey provided data from which a national
profile of childbearing women was developed. Key findings from the survey
and associated recommendations are presented in this report. MCA plans to
repeat the survey at periodic intervals to monitor trends over time and to
carry out a national media campaign to help ensure that survey results reach
a large audience of health professionals, policymakers, the general public,
and women in general. The executive summary and recommendations issued by
MCA, together with the full report and questionnaire, are available on the
Maternity Wise Web site at
http://www.maternitywise.org/listeningtomothers/.
