This issue of whether loading of IV fluids, with or without pitocin, creates
problems is a study that begs to be done. The weight loss in the baby that
some report (or suspect) may be a secondary response to delayed
lactogenesis, though. If the mother is edemic, perhaps the swelling she
experiences produces the same physical reaction that hypertension does,
suppressing lactation. If this interfers with milk flow, perhaps baby is
handicapped from the start in getting enough calories. Also, magnesium
sulfate can produce floppy babies (this observation is in the lit). Perhaps
these babies just don't do a good job accessing available milk due to
temporary tone problems. There are a lot of variables that could be looked
at in terms of why hypertension causes risk for early cessation of bfg or
why moms with swelling postpartum (perhaps for ANY reason) often have babies
who lose excess weight.
