You may remember that recently, I asked for help with a mom who had a baby
with a shortened frenulum and vasospam. Because the frenulum is an issue
that is well beyond anything I can recommend, I sent this mom off to the
local IBCLC in hopes tha things could be solved.

With the mom's permission, I have the email she sent me to let me know what
is going on. The good news is: YAY! I was correct on the frenulum. (I wasn't
certain I was.) The bad news is that this mom was NOT helped by the IBCLC.
(You'll see from the email below what her suggestion was and how this mom
has handled it.)

I need more input really badly! I called our family dentist (at home) and
got the name of a dental specialist because I really want this baby to have
a fair shot at breastfeeding if this is at _all_ a possibility.

First though, I really need some input here!

The mom's email is:

***** and I had our Dr [IBCLC] appt today. She wasn't a huge amount of help
and felt bad about it, I think. She apologized that there was no easy
answer to my pain but suggested that it was a little bit of everything -
Madison has a shorter frenulum than most, a petite lower jaw, and a hard
suck, as well as my having nipple vasospasms... Nothing that is easily
fixable. She told me to take up to 8 doses of Tylenol per day for the pain
(I don't even believe in taking pain killers when not nursing!) and showed
me a different way of holding Madison while feeding as well as some
Cortisone cream for the redness on my nipples. Not a whole lot of help, to
me. She said to try the new hold and cream for 4 days, then go and pick up
some nipple shields and try those and see her again next week for a
followup. I am not totally encouraged by the visit and that was what i was
worried about - putting my last hopes for success at breastfeeding in this
one doctor, you konw? She also suggested that between two and three months
Madison's jaw would grow bigger, etc. and that all breastfeeding problems
iron themselves out in time, in her experience. I felt like saying, "yes
but that is what everyone has said since day 1 and there are no guarantees"
and she isn't the one experiencing the pain every two hours or so...

I feel like I have tried everything and have not gotten the answers that I
need. I have spent hours upon hours on the 'net to no avail - there is just
no easy answers, it seems.

Oh well, after I have gotten through this week, Madison will have had 8
weeks of the benefits of breastmilk and as much as it breaks my heart, she
will have to go on to a bottle if this doesn't help any because I can't put
up with much more of this.

Just wanted to give you the latest update as I know you were interested in
seeinng how the appt with Dr [IBCLC] went. She also asked what I had tried
for the vasospasms and I told her B6 but that it hadn't worked - she said it
only works in 30% of cases - of course, that couldn't be me, now could it?
She talked of trying a calcium channel blocker to treat it, is this the
medication that I have read of on the web? Probably.
