In the case that I posted, my biggest concern really is in how to help a
mom without alienating her pediatrician. One of my major goals in my
community is to build bridges with all of the docs who don't yet know
enough. I do not like sneaking around someone's back; I want to be able
to be upfront. However, there is also a past history of some of the peds
talking their patients out of the procedure because they don't believe
in the issue-- and no, they don't fix the breastfeeding either.
Complicating things is the fact that the one person who does clippings
is a pediatrician also. If I could find a dentist willing to do them, it
would be a lot easier to refer the parents to a dentist. But when you
are referring parents to another pediatrician, that becomes a
stepping-on-the-toes kind of situation. Every tongue-tie case becomes a
practice of détente for me, and a struggle to find the right words and
approach.
