What jumped out at me was the statement, "Does baby seem to snort and snore.  Mom replied that he did."

This was also mentioned in Catherine's post, but it sounds like it could be laryngomalacia, which is a malformed epiglottis.

My neice's baby had this and just underwent surgery today.  She has been completely breastfed and seemed to be doing well although she was gaining weight well under normal.
