I have read with great interest (and some envy) the description of the AAP
meeting complete with lactation support center and an LC.
I just returned from San Diego where I attended the AAFP's Annual Scientific
Assembly. I was disappointed to see not one session on breastfeeding. The
only support for parents attending with infants were little rooms for diaper
changing and free formula supplied by Ross.
The AAFP also provides something called the Health Education Program, which
offers to docs a list of health education pamphlets that have been peer
reviewed. The ones listed as approved for breastfeeding were all written by
Nestle. Sigh.
I have always been proud of my professional organization's breastfeeding
stand, but was discouraged this week.
On a positive note, I attended one session on Preventitive Medicine for
Women, in which the speaker advised mentioning breastfeeding to young women,
even those not yet interested in childbearing, to help them understand the
positive role it has on their own health.
We do get the opportunity to give feedback to our organization, so I will
mention that I would appreciate at least some breastfeeding focus!
