HI Sylvia,
We use nipple shields quite often for the preemies in our NICU and no longer
have the consent forms. What we have done in place on the consent forms is
to give follow up calls to any mom going home with a shield. We also discuss
prior to discharge when and how to wean from a shield.
I found the consent forms were too complicated and gave a negative reaction
for use of a shield and I want the parents to understand that when the LC
gives one it is in good judgment and a tool to achieve breastfeeding.
