I am still meeting a number of moms who are not going
back to work anytime soon (at under 4 to 6 mos post
birth), or who plan to stay home indefinitely, and ask
when they can give bottles...drum roll...so Dad can
"bond" with the baby.
Don't know why, but I find this very discouraging.
Where did we get this screwy idea that Dads have to
feed to bond?! I am happy to talk to both the parents
about other aspects of baby care that Dad can
participate in. Sometimes, in frustration, I blurt
out, "You know, it's okay for Dad to just hang out and
snuggle the baby. He doesn't have to DO anything;
just BE WITH the baby." I think some folks, men and
women both, feel as though they have to be actively
*doing something* with the baby for it to be "quality
time".
I used to read with my eldest snoozing away, draped
over my chest, and it was pure bliss...it's sad we no
longer value, or consider the value of, *just being
together*. Isn't that why we were put here?
Okay. Mild rant over.
Carole
