Dear Joanne:
Thank you very much for your thoughts and the references. I, too, wish that
more inter- and multidisciplinary work occurred in health care of all
kinds. The fragmentation of our health care system is detrimental to each
of us. The foundation of Western psychology (and Western medicine) is
Western culture--which poses many mismatches with breastfeeding. Finding
ways to frame the mismatch so that the perspectives, skills, and
contributions of those who support breastfeeding families are not
discounted is an ongoing challenge. Anyone wanting to learn more about the
match or mismatch of culture with breastfeeding can take a look at my
article "The cultural art of breastfeeding" on the publications page of my
website, Ammawell.
