I thought I would tell you wise people about someone who has come a long
way. :-)

I asked a few weeks back where to find a LC or IBCLC in the UK, and got
some help finding a list. Thank you. This was for my mom's friend's
niece...I e-mailed the information to my mom who sent it by e-mail and
snail mail to her friend...who passed on the information to her niece.
This friend of my mom's didn't nurse her own children, but has gotten
really interested in nursing and says she might be interested in
becomming an IBCLC some day! ;-) She'd have to do a lot of work...but
I thought it commendable that she didn't push bottles on the poor girl
first off the bat. ;-)

The baby was born 6 weeks prematurely and had lots of bottles in the
hospital. She is now 8 weeks old (2 weeks corrected age, though the
girl says she thinks she's a lot more advanced than many
2-weekers...she's starting to smile and cries real tears!). They did a
lot of pumping and bottle feeding to begin with, and when the breast was
offered it was with a nipple shield. I have had several e-mails from
the girl, first to thank me for the LC contacts which gave her a kick in
the pants to contact someone...and now just to talk about nursing to
someone who "knows" (well, not about the preemie stuff, but...). She
has also been through thrush, and has weaned off the shield
(yay!)...still has sore nipples a bit (not as badly) but thinks they
need to work on the latch a bit more and maybe they'll be home free
(milk samples tested negative for thrush...would thrush automatcially
show up in the milk if it were there?). AT least for now. ;-) The
negatives left to work out are that they find bottle feeding easier
right now than breastfeeding, but I think the father is home, so she
pumps while he feeds which is a lot less time consuming for "each party"
than if one is pumping and bottle feeding by one's self...she obviously
seems quite determined to nurse which probably helps out a lot so she
tries hard, and luckily things are getting better still, not worse! I
was happy for her...

That's all for now...
