Dr. Boster ignores one very important point in his discussion of breast
milk and caries. Breastfed children with tooth decay and poor oral
hygeine are not exclusively breastfed. It's the other things they are
eating that promote decay, not the breast milk! We have very good
research to show that breast milk is NOT cariogenic. Once anything but
the breast goes into the baby's mouth, it's time to start brushing those
baby teeth. I agree with him that we need to promote oral hygeine in
all babies.
The doctor is also misinformed about the age range of our practice as
lactation consultants. I see many older babies and toddlers, in
addition to the newborns that are the mainstay of a private practice.
