While I believe that the body of evidence that bfeeding reduces the rate
of breast cancer is continuing to grow, may I very respectfully just tell
you that I cringe when I read what I consider to be an overly simplified
version of why there has been an increase in breast cancer? PLEASE don't
be quick to decide that if only everyone was bfed AND bfed their own
babies for many years breast cancer would be near nonexistent. It's just
much more complex than that. Again, I'm not disagreeing that bfeeding is
one factor, but there's clearly much more to the picture. Also, remember
that if we present this opinion with great certainty, some bfeeding
mothers may get lulled into believing that they are not at risk at all. I
can't tell you how many mothers I've heard say things like, "Well, I
guess I'm okay because I've breastfed for ___ years!" Just something I
think we need to be cautious about.

Respectfully,
Sandy Hankin (new IBCLC!)
