One of the students in our last cram course sent me a copy of the handout she
got when she had to attend an inservice given by the formula rep r/t
"Evaluating DHA/ARA in finat formula: Studies & Methods" (Title of the
power point talk. Here's the info on tow of the slides:
"Potential sources of DHA & ARA for Infant Formulas:
-- Triglycerides form (like human milk)
-- fish oil, DHA
-- Algae, single cell DHA
-- Soil fungus, single cell ARA
-- Triglyceride extract from egg lipid, DHA/ARA
-- Phosophlipic form
-- Egg lipid, DHA/ARA
-- Slaughterhouse material, DHA/ARA
Next slide:
Fatty Acid (FA) Patterns of Plasma tissue Lipids
-- Virtually all studies of FA pattern of plasma lipids of breast-fed (sic)
vs. formula-fed infants have shown higher levels of LCPUFAs in plasma lipids
of breast-fed infants."
Those are the only two slide/handouts she sent -- but isn't it interesting?
The DHA/ARA could come from slaughterhouse material!
Give me breastmilk ANY day!!
I'm sure our Valerie could wax eloquent about this!!
