I have also found that babies who have experienced precipitous labors, and
especially those who whooshed down the birth canal, sometimes have very
tight jaw muscles for the first 24 hours. These babies tend to clamp or
chomp with their jaws instead of doing rhythmic sucking. Tincture of time
seems help with those. I show parents how to place their finger in the
baby's mouth, pad side up, stroke the roof of baby's mouth gently and see
when (and if) baby moves from chomping to sucking. Then they can switch the
finger for Mom's breast and maybe get a few minutes of sucking.

I am a hospital based lactation consultant so am only seeing these babies
for a short time.
