Dear Gloria,
MgSO4 is approved by the AAP for use in breastfeeding mothers. The amount of mg in the breastmilk seems to be closely regulated by the body, in spite of maternal intake, so that the level in the milk remains fairly stable, in spite of IV infusion. Oral absorption is also very poor, Hale states 4-30%. I would advise reading the full description found in MMM,2002.
On a personal note, I was on MgSO4 and phenobarbitol for several days after my second birth with no discernable effects on my eagerly breastfeeding baby.
Warmly,
Sharon Knorr, BSMT, ASCP, IBCLC
