Could it be OAMER from slight oversupply? What about trying anti-gravity
or neutral gravity (side-lying) positions and/or triggering MER by hand
3+ minutes before latching?
Babies frequently protect themselves by backing off to clamp down on
nipple to prevent gushing of milk, and after the habit is engrained, it
takes a while for some of them to trust they won't get a firehose full
force in the mouth every time they latch! I suggest use of Ibuprofen per
package directions for a few days.
Pain assessment (LN 7/4/02) of mom before a feed would probably reveal
the scabbed area is not where most of the pain is coming from.

Before a feeding, have her gently rub the tip/scab with her fingertip and
rate the pain, (my Zone 1).
Then test or have her test Zone 2 by gently squeezing the nipple button
proper. I believe this would reveal the "meat" of the nipple" (composed
mainly of muscle and connective tissue) (Zone 2) is very tender due to
trauma against the palate, or possibly even from the jaws if baby were
really, really backing off and clamping.
P.S. the direction of the stripe coincides with the plane of the palate,
as the stripe represents the only part of the nipple directly exposed to
the vacuum when the middle of the tongue is pressing the body of the
nipple against the hard palate. This makes the vacuum very concentrated
and therefore sucking nearly blood blisters, IME.
<Baby fed on L breast in football hold,
mom's nipple came out with a horizontal stripe.>
I'll wager the football hold had baby's feet much lower than head,
because horizontal stripe results when baby's nose/palate is near 12:00,
chin near 6:00.
< Baby fed on R breast
using cross cradle hold and nipple came out with a vertical stripe.>
I'll wager the cross-cradle was a true "across the mom's tummy and tummy
to tummy hold, because verticle stripes would indicate baby's nose/palate
would be either at 9:00 (chin at 3:00) or or 3:00 (chin at 9:00),
depending on which breast is being used.
Keep us posted.
