Whether or not babies truly get nourishment from the breast immediately
at birth is not the point.  It is best for the mother to have her
infant(s) suckle immediately.  It helps her uterus and may protect her
life. Firefighter and police manuals still instruct these public
servants to have mother put the baby to breast to minimize hemorrhage.

 

Survival of other mammal species depends on how quickly the newborn can
access the teat.

Why would it be different for humans?  (Hating to hear that a nurse told
a mother “You don’t have milk at first anyway, so it doesn’t matter if
baby does not latch right away.”)
