"... However, the lids are provided
separately, in a box that is open to air and,
potentially, many hands (Eeeewwww!). "

We have our volunteers put on gloves before touching the lids. They put
them in small zip top plastic bags, 10 to a bag. When a NICU mom is taught
to pump, she gets the kit plus 10 packaged volufeeds and a bag of these
caps. We do teach her to wash her hands first. It's usually only mom who
handles the caps with bare hands.
The only time they get handled by many hands prior to use is when the NICU
RNs need a bottle or 2 plus caps to measure out a specific feeding.
Protocol is, they wash hands between babies, so it's assumed their hands
are clean.
