Hi Jane,
I have a short article (it's a question and answer type of article) on
breastfeeding and the rabies vaccine. It's from 6-12-01. The question askes
"A breastfeeding mother has been biten by a dog with unknown rabies status
and has started the rabies vaccine. Is it safe to continue breastfeeding?"
The answer is from Kathryn Edwards, MD "All rabies vaccines consist of
inactivated virus so they pose no risk of transmission. It is not known
whether inactivated rabies or the corresponding antibodies cross into breast
milk. However, difficulties with breastfeeding would not be anticipated and
are extrememely unlikely".

Also from Medications and Mothers' milk (2000 ed) page 571
lactation risk category: L3
"Rabies vaccine is prepared from inactivated rabies virus. No data are
available on transmission to breastmilk. Even if transferred to breastmilk,
it is unlikely to produce untoward effects".
I hope this helps!
Best Regards,
Donna from Alaska
