Dear Lactnetters,
       I am trying to locate information on the dosage of breastmilk that is
used to treat adult colitis. My husband became critically ill this summer
with pancreatitis and survived, but during his course of treatment, had his
spleen removed and is now combating Clostridium difficile colitis as a result
of 10 weeks of antibiotics. I know that breastmilk will aid in boosting his
immune system and help to heal the bowel.
       His doctors are receptive to the idea if I can provide literature.
Any information would be extremely helpful. Also, I am sure they would be
most receptive to banked milk as it has been pasteurized, but would fresh or
frozen milk be better? What tests would be required for the donor before
using their milk?
       I have already contacted the milk banks in Austin, San Jose and
Raleigh, have emailed Mary Rose Tully and am awaiting responses.
       Thank you for any information that you can offer. I am anxious for
him to improve and be on the road to recovery. I am supposed attend the 2004
IBCLC exam committee in Washington next month (I was the highest scorer in
2001) and I would hate to miss this opportunity.
       Sincerely,
       Linda Goldberg RN, IBCLC
