Exactly!  I figured this one out way back when I'd try to demonstrate what a
"wet" cloth diaper was!  The first time I tried to pour 3 tablespoons of
water in the diaper, it ran right through.  Now, this was a diaper that
could hold a toddler-bladder-full, given time.  But poured straight, with no
rubber pants to keep the moisture there while it could be asborbed?  I might
as well have been pouring through a couple of kleenexes.

After that, I'd either cup my hand underneath and pour slowly, or I'd pour
the water on the counter and just sop it up with the middle of the diaper.
Whatever this demo showed, it wasn't retention.
