I would like to thank Dianne for posting about her recent case of
reconditioning a baby to breastfeeding. There are several ways to
accomplish this, but I believe virtually any baby can be taught to nursed,
with enough patience and creativity. I can't express my thankfulness for
having been able to stick with it until I succeeded with Julia. She is 12
years old now, and I still see the benefits of the 13 months we spent
nursing (starting when she was just 12 months old). Most cases are not as
tough as she was. We learned that if there was a will, there was a way, and
it could be done while keeping the baby well-nurtured and happy (no "cold
turkey" tactics), which is especially important for a baby who has been
placed in a new adoptive home beyond the first few months, been
hospitalized, or otherwise not been able to be nurtured normally.
