Dear Charlotte,
I recently had a mom (one of our own nurses on OB in fact) whose
baby was very mildly tongue tied. I usually suggest clipping so this
one must have been very mild since I did not have her see a specialist.
After 4 weeks of pain that would not resolve, she finally saw an oral
surgeon and had it clipped. He said he wouldn't have normally clipped
that one as it was so mild but since she had had another baby without
painful nursing, he clipped this one. Within 1 week the pain was gone.
Why do we put moms and babies through this? It truely reminds me that
we need to suggest it more often if there is any soreness. I like what
Jan Barger said about it being an anomoly and needing to be treated not
wait to see if if should be done.
I asked one of our ENT doctors, who clips some of our
frenulums, to do a CME conference for our doctors at our hospital. So
this Friday he is doing a presentation. I gave him all the info from Dr
Brian Palmer's web sight, Allison Hazelbaker's study and information
about frenulum and some of the information from lactnet for his
presentation. I thought this would be a good way to help some of our
dr.'s become updated. Wish us luck. AND guess what? I just left a
room of a mom having trouble with latch. BAby has a mild tongue tie. I
will call the Ped's office to let them know. This is a c/section so
they will be here until Friday. They might have a baby live to show the
clipping. It must have been meant to be.
