Have to chime in to agree with Pat's post on
well-meaning parents who "cook" their babies with too
many clothing and blankets!

Here in San Diego, California, we are in coastal
desert area, very mild climate. Once, I was watching
a local baseball game on TV, camera panned into the
crowd to a mom, dressed in shorts and t-shirt with
hair pinned up, looking quite comfortable in the 80-85
degree weather. The toddler she was snuggling in her
lap was dressed in a SNOW SUIT and knit cap! I am not
kidding! The poor kid must have been roasting, not to
mention dehydrated and cranky.

To link this to breastfeeding, I do use and teach
swaddling in ONE light blanket if Baby is
disorganized/crying and having a tough time focusing
on latching...but I always tell parents that most of
the time, most babies will feed better if they are
unwrapped. Marsha Walker's "Core Curriculum" book
states infant suckling behavior DECREASES in
temperatures above mid-80 degrees Fahrenheit (there is
a large box blocking my bookshelf, so I can't check
the source!--who put that box there?!).
