Just a note on visiting hours and effects on BF. Our hospital went from
general (people other than sibs and grandparents) visiting hours of 6pm to
8pm with babies in the nursery to general visiting hours of 11am to 8pm! What
a jump. Now when I come in at 7pm to start my shift the mothers are
cross-eyed tired, haven;t done well with BF "because I had so many visitors",
and don't want to BF at night because they are exhausted. Of course lots of
staff suggest the option of the baby going to the nursery as well. We allow
dads/support people to spend the night but find for the most part that they
tend to sleep instead of help, complain about us coming into the room and
then complain the next day that they are too tired to do anything.
I have approached our coordinator about the visiting hours and encourage
patients to put comments on their press/ganey survey after discharge to no
avail. Administrations remarks are that "this is what the patients said they
wanted" Won't even budge on the issue of starting visiting hours at 1pm to at
least give mom 2 meals without interruption!! I do tell parents about it when
I admit them but am totally lost on anything else to do. I think if we did a
study we would see a huge decline in BF success related to these hours and
there are hardly any babies who aren't supplemented to some extent.
