Before you condemn all us stupid docs.......
The literature on sucrose relieving pain is OLDER than the more recent
studies on breastfeeding and pain relief. Some babies are NPO except for
medications. Some mothers are not in the NICU when the multiple painful
heelsticks, IV starts, etc. are done. I am old enough to remember when we
used "Whiskey nipples" to soothe unsettled infants! Breastmilk is best, but
sometimes not possible.
