hi christy,
this is always a difficult situation, of course for the parents, and also
for the health care providers. i think it is always best to be honest and
caring and to give people informed choices. therefore, i would perhaps say
something like this to the mother: "I am so sorry your baby is ill. I see
that you were planning to breastfeed, and even though your baby can't
breastfeed direclty, you can still express milk for him. Sometimes, when a
baby is very sick, a mother who planned to breastfeed will decide it is just
too difficult to think about doing. I wanted to talk to you about your
feelings on this, and give you these choices. Is this a good time to talk?"
