Hi all, I just wanted to tell you about my new job, it's a dream! My hours
are flexable, I set them myself. I generally go in when my kids go to
school, and come home in time to pick them up. I work with a very positive
group of nurses, the majority are anyway. My boss is terrific and very
easy to get along with, supportive too! The anesthesiology group routinely
writes pump/dump 24 hrs orders, for every lactating mom. I spoke with the
group, and they have agreed to stop as soon as I can copy them with the
documentation to back it up! I stopped by surgery and offered to bring
down a pump for anytime they had a lactating patient, they were very
receptive. I sent out a hospital wide email describing the new employee
pump station I set up, and got positive results there as well. Soon I will
be approaching management regarding the Texas Ten Step Program, and then
the Baby Friendly Program. So far, so good.
We hear so many stories of how frustrating, maddening, just plain ignorant
some hospitals can be to work with, I wanted to share my experience with
you. If my small (so far) North Texas facility is becoming so forward
thinking, there really has been a change in attitude toward breastfeeding.
The biggest cause, we have a wonderful new group of young, energetic OBs,
most of whom are women. They really get results when it comes to getting
what they want for their patients. We are also fortunate to have some
excellent Pedis who are very supportive of breastfeeding.
Man, I feel like I've landed in clover. I love my job!

Gratefully yours,

Denny Rice, RN, IBCLC
