babies who really have meconium aspiration syndrome can be very very sick
indeed. this leads to all kinds of cardiopulmonary problems and possible
sepsis (infection). so the baby could very well be sick enough to not be
able to go to breast yet.
that being said, very often it has been my expereicne that not very sick and
even well babies are denied access to the breast by health care providers
for various (IMO misguided) reasons. so i think the mother should make her
strong feelings and desires known in a non-threatening way and hopefully the
staff will have her and the baby together as much as and as soon as
possible.
re her delayed milk coming in: keep up the 'program' of regular milk
expression, she may want to try manual expression in lieu of the pump.
expressing at least 8x in 24 hrs seems to be the target no. and if she wakes
at nite she could express then too. i would not have her take a very long
stretch w/o expressing. i usually recommend sleep between 12mn and 6 am esp.
if mom is very exhausted or somewhat sick herself. i have seen this happen
and it may take 5 or more days for milk to come in. she could request that
the drops of colostrum be mixed with a small quantity of sterile water or
glucose water and given to baby if he is being fed by mouth, or the drops
can be used to swab the lips or mouth.
