Here I am again with another question. In your
experiences, who is responsible for prescribing for a
mother whose baby has thrush? Case I have is baby with
thrush, has had a yeast diaper rash for a few weeks, and
mom was treated by her OB for mastitis 3 weeks ago. Mom
was treating with the OTC remedies that are available
but began to show signs of ductal candidias ( pain
described as starting at the nipple and extending to her
back) OB refused to prescribe for her because she is
nursing. He says that the baby has thrush and she is
the baby's food source so it is the ped's responsibility
to prescribe. The ped doesn't normally prescribe for
adults (a practice standard for them) but I convinced
them to script according to Hale's book because the OB
would not be moved. So, who, in the normal course of
things, should be in charge of scripting for the mom?
Do I need to get my peds (I work for them) to be more
willing to script for mom, because mom's nursing breasts
are their territory, or should the OB be the one to make
the call?

Thanks again,
Gayle Prehn RN
