Naomi Bar-Yam says:
<<precipitous labors is labor that proceeds very quickly.
Usually these labors are otherwise uneventful, meaning
that there are very rarely problems with the babies.>>
Meconium or amniotic fluid aspiration happens in precipitous second stages
when baby gets blown out and not allowed to come down slowly and squeeze it
s fluids out. Especially if the mom is already in a stressful or
threatening situation and her FER is on overdrive. Or if she's received a
lot of IV fluids (like the prodromal early labor that turns precipitate in
active first stage). Then one has to work with a baby who's probably been
vigorously bulb-suctioned or deep suctioned or handled roughly and not much
interested in putting it's sore, confused mouth on anything.
