I've noticed this too lately and the peds don't get too wacky about it if I
point out that the baby is nursing well and having an appopriate number of
wets and stools of good volume and color.  I can think of three babies in
particular lately that were pretty big (over 8 lbs) and "looked like they had
a big weight loss" This has happened in both ceserean and vaginal deliveries.
 I've seen women with epidurals get 4-5L of IV fluid!
I also look at mom's I&O. Usually they are putting out lots of urine, having
night sweats or the opposite - pitting edema and retaining that fluid. If
it's appropriate to start pumping we can and do.
