In order to me to maintain my ACSW (Academy of Certified Social Workers)
status, I must maintain membership in NASW. I would imagine there is
precedent
for that in other professional organizations as well. Seems to me that
ILCA needs to address the issues of professionalization, licensure,
reimbursements
etc. Addressing that in a way that helps LCs do their work, in hospital,
clinic and private practice settings, will increase membership. The sense
I have gotten from the lactnet conversation about this is that people feel
that ILCA doesn't do that effectively.
It is also important to keep in mind, that ILCA is a young organization.
In its
short life, it has started a respected peer reviewed journal, a well
attended annual
conference, and has been integrally involved with a demanding education
and
certification process. Not bad for an organization that is 17 years old.
I'd be
surprised if these issues of professionalization weren't very high
on the agenda of the ILCA leadership.
