My most recent post with suggestions for Tammy included the phrase "not
breastfeeding". Diane picked up on it immediately and suggested that there
is a name for that which we should use. I have given it some thought since
then and can't say that I can think of a better descriptor. "not
breastfeeding" covers giving water, gruels, full strength cows milk,
home-adulterated cows milk, solids, vegemite in water (I kid you not!),
formula, etc, etc.
Saying "she was formula fed" gives it the air of acceptability. Whereas
saying "she was not breastfed" implies what should have happened and didn't.
How would it sound if we used the alternative feeding methods names as
little as possible in our vocabulary? The article which I had also
mentioned in that posting "Breastfeeding and Chronic Diseases" would then
become "Denial of breastmilk and chronic diseases". I feel that gives it a
lot more punch than "Formula feeding and chronic disease".
What think you?
Denise
